My Federated feed is all abuzz...

the man, the legend, the erratum.

I used to live in CT. I would read this in a campy voice. But it has its appeal.

Gov. Wilbur Cross on Nov. 12, 1936.

Time out of mind at this turn of the seasons when the hardy oak leaves rustle in the wind and the frost gives a tang to the air and the dusk falls early and the friendly evenings lengthen under the heel of Orion, it has seemed good to our people to join together in praising the Creator and Preserver, who has brought us by a way that we did not know to the end of another year...

Good morning - Religious right

Good morning!

Today is Tuesday, November 22.

The religious right continues to loom large over the Republican Party. And they continue to be a driving force behind the GOP turn toward more extreme ideology. This article just came out this morning.

It's not just Trump: Midterms show the religious right is an albatross around the GOP's neck

Firstly, I'd just like to say thank you to all the people who have liked, boosted and commented on my images, and to all the new followers I have. It's rather humbling. 😊

Today's shot comes from a magical day in the Scottish #Highlands, a few years ago, when I was photographing red squirrels.

These charming characters are incredibly agile and can jump great distances between trees.

Here I managed to capture one as it appears to be flying down my lens.

First Draft
This is a test DM to myself. This was suggested as a way to create a post as a draft. I think this works only on apps that support some sort of copy, delete and post feature. Here goes...

Second Draft
OK, I'm back. This is an edit of my first draft. The feature to change a draft (DM) to final (regular Post) is "Delete and Redraft", found in the ... menu when you view your draft DM.

Final (visible)
The process all explained at fedi.tips/how-to-use-mastodon-

Q: “Republicans enact policies that hurt their own constituents.

So why do people vote for them?”

A: It has to do with the purpose of government.

For some people, purpose of government is to help people. We think fairness is possible and the government's job is to create fairness.

Others have a different view.

They think there’s a natural order: Some people belong on top; others at the bottom.

They think people with money and power deserve their money and power.

I can't help but notice many toots from helpful newbies encouraging you to support the Mastodon Patreon.

It's fine to do that but understand it goes to just two big instances and the official Mastodon dev team.

It does NOT trickle down to YOUR instance. If you want to support your server, donate to it directly. Nearly all the costs of the explosive growth of the past few weeks is borne by local instances.

Mastodon is decentralized. There is no Mastodon Inc. This is not Twitter.

“I would urge you to keep your eyes out for how various media outlets portray the twisted turns of a desperate man bent on regaining power—especially those that slip back into the mistaken practice of covering him as if he’s just a political candidate wanting to be president.”

TIP OF THE DAY

Mastodon is not broken.

It's different, and much better. Mastodon by design promotes engagement and discourages instigating conflict. It's a dinner party, not a food fight. Most of what you might at first think is deficient is intentional. Before you rush to conclusions, try it for a while. Take part in this new community. Make new friends. Be kind. This is what social media should be. You will be amazed.

I frequently talk to people about living and working in Oman (look it up). I was there for over 8 years, worked my butt off, and occasionally worked on my photography. This one I envisioned almost a year before a took it, then I reconnoitered, waited a week for the clearest possible air. It's HDR, a merger of three shots, and I tried to make it look like what I saw. The new road to Amerat after sunset.

A chart about gas prices, which might start an argument?

A point I made about gas prices in the US, by way of a snarky graphic.

The chart comes from GasBuddy. I am not affiliated, but I rely on their web site to help me find gas stations that are not price gouging.

Anyway, here is your annotated chart...

In your opinion, what was the most important factor in moving the midterm elections toward Democrats and away from Republicans? Or something else? Please comment.

I did a little comparison: reach and reaction on Twitter and Mastodon.

I picked a subject typical of my feed and reworded it to be more native to Mastodon. Same link, issue, people, tone.

With 309 K followers on Twitter it got 81 shares and 179 likes

With 8.5 K followers on Mastodon: 123 shares and 195 likes.

Here are the two posts:

twitter.com/jayrosen_nyu/statu [305K followers, 81 shares, 179 likes]

mastodon.social/@jayrosen_nyu/ [8.5K followers, 123 RT, 195 likes]

In my ongoing quest to find the Mastodon app that fits my old programmer's mind...now relying on the Mastodon web site on PC and Android phone, and trying Metatext on my iPad. This latter choice replaces Tootle on the iPad, which had too many points of confusion for me...although YMMV.

The chaos continues. Twitter pulls the plug on Twitter Blue, subscriptions and paid-for verification blue checkmark no longer available.

This article is an excellent summary of the cultural differences between #Mastodon and #Twitter, and how the #TwitterMigration is decidedly complex for the existing people in the #Fediverse.

This is an absolute must read.
