@ellesaurus @hildabast again, the research shows that it's rarely used for that (and much more frequently used for beneficial actions). And as for the dunking, it seems like the kind of thing that can be dealt with through opt-in mechanisms and cultural norms.

@mmasnick @ellesaurus @hildabast I think you're overstating the conclusions of the available research.

The point is that the functionality of QT is to create a second, separate conversation.

As is reliably pointed out, you can already do that with a screenshot, so why this insistance that Mastodon implement the feature?

@tob @ellesaurus @hildabast as noted in the article, QUITE FREQUENTLY the point of the QT (and the reason I frequently used it) was to add context or commentary.

A screenshot could do this, but in a manner that PULLS THE ORIGINAL THREAD out, and disconnects it. And that could hurt the originator of the thread by taking them away from the conversation.

@mmasnick @tob @ellesaurus@mastodon.lol @hildabast I really dislike the idea of screenshots instead of QTs because (a) you do lose that original convo and (b) people are just not bothering to put alt text on their screenshots, which means it's another way of excluding people who use screen readers from the conversation.

@anathema_device @mmasnick @ellesaurus @hildabast Mastodon should implement a "did you forget to include Alt text?" warning before it implements QT
