It's very wearying to work in tech when the big names are pushing various flavours of snake oil one day, and being aggressively anti-worker the next. In many cases their core products are turning to shite all the while (Google Search springs to mind).

People who don't work in tech get angry about these things, but the closer you are to it, the worse it looks. There's no "actually it makes sense" - it doesn't.

The association with the industry means you're angry but also mortified.

Hard to overstate just how much worse off we would be if Ukraine had not stood firm.

The world is in a much, much better place than it was a year ago, and Ukrainian leadership, principles, and enormous sacrifice is responsible for much of the improvement.

All who believe in democracy owe a profound debt to Ukrainians.

And we should pay that debt immediately, with full and unflinching support for their defence, and every possible aid for reconstruction.

Multiscale variations of the crustal stress field throughout North America

Below is a map of the crustal stress field of North America. I love maps, and this beautiful map is one of my favorites. It is a comprehensive view of the tectonic forces at play in our very dynamic planet and how they are expressed in the lithosphere we live on. The map illustrates how stresses vary across the continent, the types of faulting they induce, and where the model disagrees there are opportunities for further research to answer the wealth of questions still remaining. I recommend reading this fascinating article and the linked documentation if needed for better understanding. Below is an overview.

Black arrowheads across the map indicate absolute plate motion. Even while other crustal stress forces (like gravity, and postglacial rebound) are at work within the plates, the plates are steadily moving or drifting. The North American plate is moving to the west-southwest at a little over 2 cm or about ~1 inch per year driven by the spreading center that created the Atlantic Ocean.

The authors use nearly 2,000 locations with borehole measurements, or well-constrained focal plane mechanisms, and sense of recent fault slip for the map. From these data they derive the horizontal stress tensor (SHmax) shown as short black lines on the map. The quality of the measurement is indicated by the thickness of the line, and the thicker the line, the higher the quality. SHmax is almost always nearly perpendicular to the fault plane, so the faulting will be perpendicular to the lines. Note the San Andreas fault running down the west coast - the SHmax lines are perpendicular.

The colors on the map indicate the style of faulting appropriate to the stress regime and varies from dark blue to light blue for normal (extensional, crust extends horizontally), green to yellow for strike-slip (fault slides past itself, like San Andreas), and red to dark grey for reverse faulting (compressional, one side moves over the other).

The authors find several broad patterns - “compressive: strike-slip/reverse and reverse faulting (RF) in eastern parts of North America, broadly strike-slip (SS) faulting in the center of the continent, normal faulting (NF) in the Basin and Range province, Rio Grande Rift, and the western Great Plains. Extensional stress fields are also seen in northeast Texas, sedimentary rocks of the Gulf Coast, and in parts of Mexico and Alaska.”

The picture is a little more complex for the west - “Plate interactions are especially apparent in a narrow zone along the western margin that is subject to varying components of convergence and shear traction. The high-resolution picture of the stress field now available in many regions documents local and regional variability that is especially pronounced in parts of the western USA, as discussed below. In some cases, these variations allow us to identify sources of regional and local stress.”

The article looks into other factors such as Gravity Potential Energy (GPE), basically where the crust is heavier or lighter due to density, thickness, and other factors. Also discussed is the eastern seaboard where SHmax values do not fit well. The authors attribute it to the influence of the neighboring Atlantic Mid-Ocean Ridge. There are several more figures to reference and further discussion.

One of the reasons I love this map, besides its beauty and comprehensive study, is that it unifies much of the continental tectonics and makes a great reference when studying an area you are not familiar with. If you’d like to learn more the link is below!
