TIL you can't just log in to Mastodon, you have to log in to your Mastodon *server*. That seems a bit counter-intuitive, especially since it's been so widely touted that the server doesn't really matter.

@LeighBowerysLuxCom Yep. Each server (or "instance") is self-contained. The instances are connected through federation and the users of the connected instances can communicate. Like if two countries share an open border.
