@noam I get it. I just see it as fighting with their tools. Same as the parent that got the Bible banned in a county in Utah.

I hate the hypocrisy of all fundamentalists. I know their minds won't be changed, but I like challenging their death grip on religion - just like the U.S. right has tried to own "patriotism"

The 7-2 ruling on the ICWA (Indian Child Welfare Act) is a wonderful surprise that has far-reaching impact in terms of tribal sovereignty.

There's a Powwow this weekend at the Washoe Stewart Colony - site of the Stewart Indian School. I imagine this will make the event even more joyful.

@noam
I also see it as a reclaiming of religion from these asswipes and parallel to discussions of abortion and how it is portrayed in Jewish law.

Which is another point - Judaism is a legalistic religion, so the way concepts in commentary are presented is in very legalistic ways. Again, I am not presenting this as how it should be approached today, just a counterpoint to their crap.

Of course, Jews are suspect and othered by the same people, but again not the audience.

@noam I don't see this as a modern argument, but an example of how the concept and thinking about gender in an inclusive and acceptable way is not something new, nor is it universally condemned by all religions.

It is more a direct refutation of some of the current BS being spewed by the Christofacists (and some Orthodox Jewish fundis). It won't change their minds, but it could open eyes/minds of people who are only hearing their side.

@noam I see your point, but like a good Jew I'll argue with you. if the concept of gender (vs. bio sex) is not extant, can it be not discussed? (sorry for the double negative). Also, while it was a translation, I see the author speaking about people who chose to change gender, despite bio sex so doesn't that count?

@Rachel_Thorn I'm right there with you (I used to be an ASL interpreter), but I will take one small exception to what you wrote - there *are* people who cannot speak but are not Deaf. They have expressive aphasia due to a stroke or other neurological event.

I in no ways want to negate your point, but felt a need to clarify.

Huh. This is something I did not know (but then, I am not a Talmudic scholar) The Talmud recognizes 8 genders. myjewishlearning.com/article/t

@miyotehew

Really beautiful - tools that bring pleasure while also working well are especially nice.

For rope, have you tried tablet (card) weaving? It can be done on an inkle loom

Picture does not do it justice, but this is my new name tag lanyard. It was beaded (peyote stitch) by a Washoe co-worker and commissioned by my CMO. Now that's motivation to wear my name tag.

'I Am Home' Spotlights Navajo Traditions In A Beautiful Way | Huffington Post

It’s been a whirlwind year for #filmmaker Kymon Greyhorse.

Six months after he graduated from the University of New Mexico, he learned his short film “I Am Home” had been selected to screen at Sundance, the largest independent film festival in the country. At just 23, Greyhorse — who is of #Navajo and #Tongan descent — was hobnobbing with big-name directors and A-list celebrities.

OMG!! I can't believe this, but I love it! Five women Senators in South Carolina
( 3 Republicans and 2 Democrats) defeated a near-total ban on abortion. In Nebraska, it was an 80-year-old Republican State Senator Merv Riepe who abstained from voting to advance the near-total ban. Republicans with SENSE saved two states today from abortion bans. Yeh, I don't type that many times!

@BigBoppa @pzmyers huh, my sister lives in a cottage in Norfolk. They tore down the "new" part (I think 18th cen) and restored (as in spouse did the majority of the carpentry/ plaster, plumbing, electrical) and my sister re glazed all leaded glass windows) the 16th cen part and built a new addition.

That said, spouse was British and they bought over 40 years ago.

Too busy/tired to do much during the week, but rug #1 is half done. Mostly green with a crazy quilt approach in the center in a predominantly blue palate. Pendleton blanket trimmings for weft. @weaving

@pzmyers There was a lot I appreciated about Minnesota, but the sticky hot summers and the lack of mountains or ocean drove me back west.

Duluth would be possible, except 1) my Louisiana-born wife would be beyond miserable; 2) As an old I don't know I could do a Northern MN winter

As soon as I can retire, it's back to the PNW for me.

Well fuck. I was supposed to go to a transplant evaluation with a patient in Sacramento it was postponed from March because of weather/ driving over the mountains. Snow melted down here, roads clear, weatherbeautiful andwarm...and it started snowing last night. Now chains or snow tires/4 wheel drive are required. I have all wheel drive but that's it, and the tribe's transportation vehicles have neither.

I feel so bad it will be postponed again
